Piano Proficiency Requirements for Piano Principals


Piano Principals are required to register for the Piano Proficiency Exam COURSE (MUG 2010.01) and take the Piano Proficiency Exam the same semester as the Sophomore Technical. The Proficiency Exam is administered in the Jury at the end of the semester along with the Sophomore Technical. Piano Juries are usually scheduled for Thursday after classes end. Please signup for a Jury time on the piano bulletin board across the hall from Dr. Belfiglio's office.When taking the piano proficiency exam, sign up for one extra concurrent time slot.

Here are the Proficiency requirement for Piano Principals:

1. Harmonize a melody using primary chords and secondary dominants.

2. Transpose a simple piece up/down a half/whole step, both hands at the same time. You may be required to play more than one of the transpositions on the exam.

3. Improvise a melody and simple accompaniment over a given chord progression for the required major and minor keys through two accidentals: C, D, F, G, Bb, am, dm, em, gm, bm

4. Sight read a hymn.

The HARMONIZATION, IMPROVISATION, and TRANSPOSITION examples will be available as a PRINTED HARDCOPY the day before the jury exam outside Dr. Landes' office, after about 10am.
